UN Global Compact

On March 3, 2006, Symantec CEO John W. Thompson announced Symantec’s commitment to support the ten principles of the United Nations Global Compact and signed the Global Compact in the presence of Gavin Power, Senior Advisor of the Global Compact, and more than 200 Silicon Valley business leaders.

  • Symantec announced its signing of the Global Compact in a press release dated March 15, 2006.
  • Symantec issued an interim Communication on Progress in March 2008.
  • Symantec’s 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report (issued in September 2008) serves as a more comprehensive Communication on Progress. Symantec will publish a full report every two years, with an annual Web-based update on progress.

Symantec is proud to be a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact and encourages all companies to adopt the Global Compact’s ten principles to protect human rights, uphold ethical labor conditions, preserve the environment, and combat corruption. In the two years since we became a member, we have worked diligently to strengthen our own performance and share best practices and thought leadership with others.

United States Global Compact Network

Symantec serves as a focal point for the United States Global Compact Network. In November 2007 we co-hosted more than 50 participants in San Francisco, California, at the “Responsible Procurement” network conference. Attendees shared their knowledge and best practices for sustainable procurement, i.e., supply-chain issues, ethical sourcing, and new information technology applications.

We helped plan and organize a second, human rights-oriented event in May 2008 at the Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. Approximately 100 executives, civil society representatives, academics, and human rights experts attended the meeting, which marked the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A full description of the symposium is available on the Global Compact Web site.
